Citizens’ Voices Minutes

October 18, 2006

Present: Tony, Tom, Wayne, Ardie Thompson, Jeanne, Malda & Margaret Preska.

Margaret provided us with a wealth of information about Excel Energy. In the 80's they did have greenhouses that used the recycled hot water. They grew beautiful roses. The price of roses dropped due to foreign imports as well as Excel needed that land to expand its plant. The greenhouses were discontinued.

Excel now uses a closed system where the hot water is cooled & recycled in towers. Any water that flows into the river is no warmer than the river water flowing by.

Jerry Larson is the manager of the local Excel plant.

Excel will purchase energy from the Calpine plant. The energy is created by gas firing.

Could we use the waste gas that is being burned off from the pipeline passing in the vicinity?

We need to talk with George Rosati, Jerry Larson, the Center Point people and a greenhouse such as Drummers.

We should have a tour of sewage treatment plant, demolition landfill, Calpine & Drummers.

Could we get an EPA grant for a demonstration project creating synergy from sewage treatment, energy use, greenhouse use, etc. for total utilization of waste resources for electricity, water & natural gas burnoff?

First we need to talk to George Rosati, Jerry Larson, Center Point staff and a greenhouse such as Drummers.

If each of these contacts feels that there is merit in continuing the discussion of this topic, we should convene a meeting of all of them.

There may be additional clean water that needs to be stored in quarries, check on this.

Eventually we should involve the high school and university students. They might work on closed carbon/water systems in the green house to show how that might work in the planet.

Next meeting:  11/1 at 7:30 at Coffee Hag
